Give staff AI “trial & error” sandboxes

When we talk about creating a safe space to experiment with AI, we are not talking about letting a computer run wild with congregation member data. Far from it. In a church, a “safe space” means setting up a controlled environment where you can try out AI tools for things like strategic planning, workflow improvement, or even reaching out to prospective members, without worrying about messing up member data or causing any privacy or security rules. It is like having a practice field where your team can try new plays before the big game.
You need to see how AI can help reduce administrative costs or improve bookeeping accuracy, but you need to do it without any real-world risks at first. This involves using dummy data, or carefully anonymized information, in a separate, secure part of your system.
You might pick a small team to test out a new AI tool for scheduling or to help draft church-wide emails. The point is to give your operations directors and IT supervisors the freedom to explore AI’s potential without the fear of making a mistake that could have big consequences.
This approach also helps address misconceptions about AI replacing human staff. It shows everyone that AI is a tool to be learned and guided, not a force taking over.
As a leader, your job is to create an environment where curiosity is encouraged, and learning is part of the process, all while keeping member and visitor data private and secure. Keep these as top priorities.
This way, you can build confidence in AI’s ability to help your church run smoother while improving your person-to-person ministry.
